Welcome back to another post, where today we will be going over the 4-2-4 formation which gave me so much success at Man Utd where I was rebuilding the side. My goal was to bring back the good times and win a trophy or two. However, things went better than expected thanks to this tactic I created and dominated in all competitions winning many trophies!
Let me introduce the Football Manager 2022 Lethal 4-2-4 tactic that makes you score LOTS of goals! With 127 goals in one season, it was goals galore at Old Trafford!
How did I get inspired by the 4-2-4 Formation?
Well, the manager who is there today, Ralf Rangnick preferred formation is a 4-2-4 / 4-2-2-2. The key behind this is that he wants his wide players to get close to the opposition wide players and cause traps. Once the traps are set, he wants them to counter and try to score as fast as possible. He’s key principles in the tactics are:
- Intense pressing
- Quick vertical passes
- Set up traps particularly out wide
- Winning the ball back as quick as possible
- Having a shot off on goal within 8-10 seconds after winning the ball
Now, that we have gone over the inspiration behind the tactic, let’s dive into how this was deployed in the Man Utd save with a few amendments of my own.
The 4-2-4 Formation
The mentality was always set to attacking and as you can see, few positions were modified as I wanted to have my style on the tactic which seemed to pay off nice!
The 2 main things I noticed were the DLP, which was mainly Fernandes, would play nice direct balls over the top of the opposition backline, which gave us plenty of chances to break quick.
Also, the inside winger would not move inside off the ball however, when having the ball would come inside and either assist or get a shot off. This role was either for Rashford or Sancho.

A Statistical Overview of the Tactics Performance
As we can see, a dominating read on the attacking data in comparison to the rest of the teams in the league. Also, we managed to do well in the possession stats and won the ball back more than the average team, which is exactly what I wanted within the tactic.
Attacking/Defensive Data Hub Stats:
So, no surprise that attacking wise we dominated compared to the other teams. It did help that we had quality up top too. The crossing stats were also a good read, this helped with the full-backs pushing on and creating overlaps. Hence why we had so many crosses into the box and defensive wise, we kept it fairly solid.
Attacking Stats:
This is a more in-depth look into how well this tactic did for me. We can see that we dominated everyone in the league and I mean by some distance! Those stats are some read! Along with still managing to hold a decent amount of possession, where usually with this style is it not known to have the teams keep the ball and be patient.
Defensive Stats:
We can see that the team were not shy to put a tackle in, which makes sense with the instructions applied within the tactic and the importance of winning the ball back. This paid off well against the bigger sides, who we outran in every game we played. The clean sheets are the icing on the cake, we kept it solid at the back whilst attacking in the frighting way that we did.
Individual Stats To Note:
Finally, I wanted to show the amazing read right here. The goals that were scored across the team in 1 season along with those assist numbers! Ronaldo in his final season broke records as usual and smashed 52 goals over the season. The front 2 combined scored 85 goals alone!
That wraps up my lethal 4-2-4 tactic for Football Manager 2022 and its overview.
Why not try this out in your save and see how much success you get with it? It is a unique tactic compared to what we see out there today. It may seem basic but as we can see the numbers don’t lie, it’s a “lethal” tactic that brings you LOTS of goals and entertaining attacking football!
