Since Pep Guardiola won a historical sextuple with Barcelona in one year, the huge fan base of his Tiki-Taka style of play loves implementing his ideas onto Football Manager. Although the evolution of football has been rapid over the last 16 years with more prominence on quick transitions to catch the opposition off guard when they are unbalanced rather than retaining possession until an opportunity for a breakthrough occurs, the 4-3-3 system has been the go-to formation for anyone preferring to play expansive football that let you see your team play beautiful attacking football.

Today we are proud to present a high-scoring 4-3-3 positional play tactic for Football Manager 2024 by FM Tactician GYR FM.

This new FM24 possession tactic draws parallels to the Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona tactics for 2009-10 season but incorporates the need for verticallity in today’s game to beat the low block and those parking the bus by using wide overloads to come to goalscoring opportunities. For any tactician you might notice how this system morphs the tactical style of Hansi Flick with Pep Guardiola’s juego de posicion by combining quick short passes with more forward urgency.

About GYR’s Gambit v2 – The Best 4-3-3 Tactic for FM24

The 4-3-3 is one of the most recognizable shapes in Football Manager—but too often, it’s used safely. Predictably. Plug in standard roles, tick the usual boxes, and it works—until it doesn’t.

With Gambit, GYRFM reimagines the 4-3-3 not through wild experimentation, but through structure, synergy, and a true commitment to positional play.

This isn’t about quirky roles—it’s about how intelligent movement and spatial control can make a familiar shape feel brand new.

At the core of Gambit lies the Half Back, who drops between the Ball Playing Centre-Backs to form a three-man build-up unit. By using a Half Back who intelligently drops between the centre-backs it free up the defensive duties of the Attacking Fullbacks who can push high and wide – providing aggressive width and pinning opposition wingers deep with their ambitious forward runs.

This rotation creates natural passing triangles, overloads in wide areas, and total control over the tempo.

By taking advantage of the Half Back player role’s movement, the combination of a Deep-Lying Playmaker and a Roaming Playmaker in the midfield line and attacking fullbacks to stretch the width, the tactic transits from a regular 4-3-3 formation or 4-1-4-1 out of possession into a 2-3-5 formation in possession.

This subtle shift in structure creates a dynamic shape that constantly adapts—offering stability at the back and overloads in key zones.

In midfield, balance is everything. On the left, a Deep Lying Playmaker offers calm distribution and defensive awareness. On the right, the Roaming Playmaker provides the tactical chaos—breaking lines, drifting into half-spaces, and linking defense to attack in a free-flowing rhythm.

Together, they offer a perfect blend of structure and freedom, allowing the system to flex without losing its shape. Afterall, it’s not about chasing trends; it’s about dictating the game on your terms.

The front three are precise and purposeful. On the right, an Inside Forward (Attack) cuts in with intent, acting as a secondary striker in the box. On the left, an Inside Forward (Support) offers link-up play and balance, working more subtly to maintain shape.

Leading the line is an Advanced Forward—direct, relentless, and always looking to exploit the space created by the movement around him.

All together, GYR’s Gambit 4-3-3 Positional Play tactic brings familiar pieces into a tightly choreographed system where space is managed, movement is deliberate, and every action serves a tactical purpose. It’s about intelligent structure—players moving not just to receive the ball, but to manipulate the pitch itself.

This is a tactic for managers who want to dominate the match with players moving into impactful positions. Gambit gives you control, creativity, and clarity—all built within the timeless 4-3-3, reengineered the GYRFM way.
