Under the guidance of Jupp Heynckes, Bayern Münich managed to win an historical treble – becoming the first German side to win ever achieve the feat. Here, is my tactical emulation of Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern Munich 2013 tactics!
Hunt for success on Football Manager 2024 by replicating how this historical side played under Jupp Heynckes.
2012/13 was supposed to be the last year of Jupp Heynckes managerial career and it would have been all good given the ending, but in 2017 the call of love from Bayern Munich brought Josef Heynckes back to the bench. The results were not the same given that the coach from Mönchengladbach completed the Treble in the 2012/13 season, or rather Poker given that he also won the German Super Cup. I want to talk to you about that feat in this article with the tactical analysis and recreation of Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern Munich tactics and make a tactical emulation in Football Manager 2024 of his tactics.
The German coach had already won the Champions League with Real Madrid in the 1996/97 season in the final against Lippi’s Juventus , thus joining coaches such as Mourinho, Ernst Happel, Hitzfeld in winning the competition with two different teams.
Bayern Munich’s 4-2-3-1 Formation
That Bayern Munich lined up with 4-2-3-1 and the squad included players such as Neuer between the posts, Boateng, Alaba and captain Lahm in defence. In midfield Javi Martinez, a playmaker who in the future will also play the role of central defender and therefore good at setting and defensive coverage. Together with him a total midfielder like Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Up front, quality and quantity reigned supreme with Robben and Ribery providing creativity and creativity as well as goals and assists. Centrally we find Thomas Müller and Mario Mandžukić, the quantity of the department with goals and physicality.
Construction
Heynckes‘ Bayern Münich builds with a 2+3 shape, with the playmaker lowering towards the centre-backs and the full-backs rising on his line . The other midfielder is in a more advanced position but still supporting the construction. The four men in front immediately remain tall, with the outside players wide.
Development
The development of the action is through the lateral chains, with the full-backs both pushing but with different role interpretations. On the left, Alaba is a full-back winger, very good in the attacking phase and at exploiting the space left by Ribery. The Frenchman himself will tighten his position, freeing up space for the Swiss but remaining in support to receive the ball and target the opposing defense, looking for personal action or an assist for his teammates.
On the other side the chain is formed by Lahm and Robben . The German plays the role of full-back, accompanying the action and looking for the cross also from the attacking midfield based on the movement of Robben who will start wide, deciding whether to cut inside or go to the back. One characteristic of the two tall wingers is their non-fixed position, in fact it is not out of the question to see them swap positions during the same play.
The two men in front are interchangeable, in the sense that Mandžukić often uses his dirty work to free up space for Müller to come in from behind and often find himself as an attacker. However, the Croatian is also a skilled finisher.
Finalization
The finishing is the most unpredictable phase of this Bayern Munich. The Germans can close the action with all their advanced forces and in various ways. The insertions from the offensive wingers or the closing of the action by themselves but from every part of the pitch not only that of his competence, the exchanges as mentioned between Müller and Mandžukić, finally also through crosses given the Croatian’s skill in the aerial game.
Non-possession phase
As per German style, the non-possession phase is characterized by intense and high pressing, in search of recovering the ball and a prompt quick restart. The team in the pressing phase lines up with a 4-2-4, with the full-backs also under high pressure. If this pressing is missed, the team lines up with a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2, with the two offensive men dropping down with the midfielders.
Test results
The tactic has been tested with many large, small and intermediate teams always with excellent results. The game version is 24.3, the last post winter update.
