When Enzo Maresca took over the managerial position at Chelsea, they had spent €632m and the squad bolstered 43(!) players at the start of the 2024/25 season. Nicholas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Pedro Neto, Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix was all bought to help the team in the attacking phase and score more goals. Who is Shumaira Mheuka?
Shumaira “Shim” Mheuka is one of the most promising English talents currently plying his trade through the Cobham Academy. Born on October 20, 2007, in Birmingham, England, to Zimbabwean parents, the centre forward began his football journey at Brighton & Hove Albion’s academy at age nine, where he showed early promise, debuting for their under-18 team at just 14 years old ending up scoring 1 goal in 3 appearances despite playing against players three to four years older.
In July 2022, he transferred to Chelsea, a move that later saw Chelsea ordered to pay Brighton up to £4.25 million following a tribunal ruling, including a base fee of £1 million.
At Chelsea, Shim Mheuka quickly made an impact, debuting for their under-18 team in October 2022 during a 2–1 win over West Bromwich Albion. All through the 2023/24 season, Mheuka featured regularly in Chelsea’s Under-18 squad – ending up scoring 12 goals over 20 appearances according to the official Chelsea website.
At the same time he showcased his huge talent for England U17 and five goals in 7 appearances between September and November 2023 before being one of the key players at the UEFA European U17 Championship in 2024 where he helped his side to qualify from the group stage.
Although England was knocked out in the quarter-finals on penalties, Chelsea had seen enough and promoted him to the Under-21 squad making him play regularly in the Premier League 2. After scoring his first goal in PL2 in April 2024 against Fulham, Mheuka told the media:
‘Getting that first goal took a while and it was definitely frustrating at times. I had to stay focused and keep putting in the work every game, knowing the time would come. Finally, it did.
‘I was playing well without scoring, but goals make a real difference and I was thrilled to get that first one. I’ve been confident and adapting to Under-21s football, even though it’s my first season. I remind myself to make the most of every opportunity, whether it’s in training or a game.’
Soon after he was travelling with the first team – preparing him mentally for what was coming next.
Mheuka’s Rapid Rise at Chelsea
After receiving 14 appearances at an higher level by playing in several positions in the Premier League 2, getting action in the EFL Trophy against older players and netting an incredible hattrick in the FA Youth Cup, the 2024/25 season can not be described no other than a whirlwind for the teenage striker. From signing his professional contract four days after turning 17, tying him up at Stamford Bridge until summer 2027, he has established himself in the Under-21 squad, as well as making his professional debut.
Shumaira Mheuka somehow surprisingly made his first-team debut on December 12, 2024, as a second-half substitute in a 3–1 UEFA Conference League victory against Astana in Kazakhstan. Two months later, and he entered Stamford Bridge along with four other Cobham graduates, coming on as a late substitute against Southampton.
By making his Premier League debut on February 25, 2025, at the age of 17 years 1 month and 22 days, Shumaira Mheuka became the fifth youngest Chelsea debutant in Premier League. Entering the pitch made him debut only a month later than Terry Venables or 15 days later than Dominic Solanke – revealing how much Chelsea value the English wonderkid.
At the same time, it reveals alot about Mheuka’s professionalism and quick progress as he has gone from playing for the U18s to playing regularly for the Under-21s in less than a year!
Sponsored by Adidas, Shim Mheuka is one of the greatest gems coming through at the Cobham training ground in recent years!
What’s Shim Mheuka’s positional abilities?

Known for his technical skill, clinical finishing, and off-the-ball movement, Mheuka is considered one of Europe’s most promising young strikers. Primarily a centre-forward or striker suited to play in a 4-3-3 system, Mheuka has showcased his versatility to play both as a second forward thriving in the deeper space behind a lone striker, or used occassionally on either wing in academy matches to exploit space, though this is not his natural habitat.
As a highly intelligent player with great movements, Shumaira Mheuka can play in all positions up front helping his side both to create chances and come to goalscoring opportunities, link-up play by dropping deep into the #10 position and work the spaces between the lines in a 4-2-3-1 system, or used as a target man, pressing forward or as an Advanced Forward, who’s only responsibilities is to provide depth and bag goals.
His ability to adapt to tactical shifts—such as pressing from the front or holding up play—makes him a modern forward with potential to evolve further.
Style of Play
Shumaira Mheuka embodies the archetype of a dynamic, physically imposing modern striker with a blend of traditional No. 9 traits and contemporary flair.
His playing style revolves around exploiting defensive lines with intelligent movement, using his strength to hold off defenders, and finishing chances with clinical precision. He thrives in systems that prioritize quick transitions and direct play, often positioning himself to receive through balls or capitalize on crosses.
Mheuka’s willingness to press high and engage in defensive work aligns with the demands of current Premier League tactics, particularly under Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca, who favors energetic, pressing forwards. While not a flashy dribbler, his technical ability shines in tight spaces, where he manipulates the ball effectively to create shooting opportunities.
Whether he is the focal point of the attack in a 4-3-3 system, link up play by dropping deeper into the #10 position, or drift wide, Mheuka’s style of play compares to several other former Chelsea legends and graduates.
His blend of physicality, technical ability, natural instinct in front of the goal and intelligent movement reminds me of both Romelu Lukaku and Didier Drogba.
What’s Shim Mheuka’s greatest abilities?
Off the ball Movement & Speed
One of the notable strengths is his speed over the first few metres and off the ball movement. Incredible at gaining advantage over his opposing marker by beating them with smartness and cleverness as he moves between channels and uses acceleration to get off their shoulders, Mheuka can be a huge counter-attacking threat as he’s on the receiving end of perfectly weighted through balls.
Often using his incredible speed over the first metres to offer a direct pathway to enter the final third, he is a constant torn to the opposing team’s defensive block whether he makes quick runs in behind the last defender or to wide areas to open up space for his teammates in the center of the pitch.
As part of his game, Mheuka is brilliant at evading pressure when running with the ball and using his agility to change the direction of his runs and carry the ball towards the goal.
Summary: His off-the-ball runs and positioning create space for himself and others, showcasing a high football IQ for his age.
Clinical Finishing
Able to spearhead any team with his raw mix of powerful and accurate finishing, physical strength, pace and intelligent runs, Mheuka’s abilities is quite similar to Drogba’s legacy.
Like Drogba he has a gift of being at the right place at the right time to finish off chances by tapping the ball into the back of the net, be at the receiving end of a cross to head the ball into the goal, or strike the ball with power and accuracy as he place the ball either from outside or inside the penalty box.
Many of his goals has come from running with the ball and creating chances for himself by setting speed towards the goal before striking the ball with power and accuracy out of reach for the goalkeeper.
His abilities to place the ball at the back of the net is a testiment to his incredible potential that might make him into a world-class player that racks up topscorer titles either in England or one of the top five leagues in Europe.
Who know’s perhaps by the age of 35 we can class Shim Mheuka along with other notable Premier League legends?!
Summary: Mheuka has a keen eye for goal, demonstrated by his consistent scoring record across Chelsea’s youth teams and England youth internationals (e.g., 12 goals in 20 U-18 appearances in 2023/24, goals for England U-17s and U-19s).
Link-up play
Like Lukaku he excels at linking up play and use his physic and technique to hold up the ball until his teammates are in better positions to enter the final third. At the same time his abilities at finishing off chances in and around the penalty area draws further comparisons.
Unlike other physical target men, Mheuka’s abilities on the ball, especially in tight spaces, is eye-catching. Able to use his body frame, great balance, technical abilities in both receiving the ball and dribble to get more space to play the pass, enables him to thrive between the lines.
His above average flair, agility and dribbles makes him into a difficult press-resistent forward to come up against, whether he is running with the ball down the flanks, or penetrates the defensive line by using his explosiveness to get into a better position to shoot, or pass the ball.
By dropping deep and receiving the ball with back to goal, Mheuka can either use tight dribbles and good close control to fend off defenders, or make progressive passes out wide onto an onrushing winger.
Summary: Mheuka possesses above-average ball manipulation skills, allowing him to operate in tight spaces and maintain possession under pressure.
Physical Presence
Another major part of Mheuka’s style of play is his physicality and most notably strength.
At 1.85m, Mheuka uses his upper-body strength effectively to shield the ball and hold off defenders, making him a strong target man despite his young age.
His strength and natural fitness makes him able to hold up the ball in key moments of the game fending off his opponents by using his body to protect the ball. Time and time again, he displays his outstanding physic in the important seconds before finishing off a chance. As this highlight pack shows, he shows composure, athleticism and quickness as he combines amazing close control with finishing technique.
Avoiding counter-attacks when the team has pushed up in their quest to come to goalscoring opportunities, he can also keep hold of the ball until supporting players arrives from the deep.
This makes him into quite a complete forward who is as good on the ground as in aerial situations.
When the team is out of possession, he tends to take advantage of his immense physic and work rate to press the ball carrier and contribute defensively, adding value beyond his attacking output.
Always going above and beyond to chase the ball and use his quickness off the mark and determination to seek to close off passing lanes and regain possession high up the ball, he adds everything required for high press / possession-oriented teams.
Versatility
Another valueable trait with Shim Mheuka is his versatility and adaptability to make an impact in different tactical styles. Although he is a makeshift player in several positions and roles, his versatility can be highly valueable for the manager.
His ability to adapt to tactical shifts—such as pressing from the front or holding up play—makes him a modern forward with potential to evolve further, perhaps as making hidden runs from wide areas and thereby avoid being marked out of the game.
Weaknesses
- Physical Maturity: While strong for his age, Mheuka’s frame is still developing. Against senior defenders with greater physicality (e.g., in Premier League or European competition), he may struggle to impose himself consistently until he adds more muscle.
- Dribbling & 1v1 Flair: He lacks the explosive dribbling ability of wingers or more creative forwards. His game isn’t built around taking on defenders individually, which limits his effectiveness in isolated situations.
- Aerial Consistency: While physically strong, his heading technique and dominance in the air are areas that could improve to fully round out his game as a traditional No. 9. Currently his heading lacks precision, particularly in linking play rather than finishing, an area ripe for improvement.
- Decision-Making: At times, his youth shows in over-eagerness—rushing shots or forcing passes when patience might yield better outcomes. This is a natural flaw for a 17-year-old and should refine with experience.
- Consistency: As a young player still developing, Mheuka can have off-days, such as his struggles in Chelsea’s 5-1 FA Youth Cup loss to Manchester United in February 2025, where he missed key chances.

Conclusion
Described as the next big thing coming through the Cobham Academy, Mheuka’s abilities both on and off the ball, raw talent, lethal finishing and physic makes him a true competitior for Nicholas Jackson’s first team role as his successor.
Comparisons to a young Eddie Nketiah (for movement) or Ollie Watkins (for pressing and finishing) are apt, though his ceiling could surpass both with the right guidance. Chelsea’s crowded attacking roster means breaking through will be tough, but his raw skills and sky-high potential suggest a bright future—either at Stamford Bridge or as a high-value transfer asset.
Shumaira Mheuka is a rising star in Chelsea’s academy, poised to follow the path of homegrown talents like Tammy Abraham or Dominic Solanke, albeit with a distinct style. Mheuka’s style of play, incredible skills and physicality align well with what Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea tactics needs despite he is still an unpolished yet raw talent with huge potential to reach the heighest level of football within the next few years.
Mheuka has all the tools to become a top-tier forward, blending physicality, skill, and intelligence. If he can iron out inconsistencies and build senior experience, he could be Chelsea’s next homegrown star.
Potential Rating: 9/10
